owl in flight

Lark or Owl

Mark Wahlberg went viral this week by revealing his daily routine.

He gets up at 2:30 to begin his day with prayer– wait 2:30?  We can imagine God saying, ‘Really Wahlberg? Go back to sleep.”

Is it us, or does beginning your day that early seem a little, umm extreme?  Is it even day at that ungodly hour?

Just maybe Wahlberg has hit the – wait for it – mark on this earlier rising thing.  After all, he is 47 and in better shape than we were in our 20’s…okay in our 20’s daydreaming. His schedule does paint the picture of a disciplined individual:

2:30                wake up

2:45                 prayer time

3:15                  breakfast

3:40-5:15 am workout meal

5: 30 am         post workout meal

6 am                shower

7:30                 golf

8am                snack

9:30 am         cryo chamber recovery

10:30 am       snack

11am               family time/meetings/work calls

1pm                lunch

2pm               meetings/work calls

3pm              pick up kids @ school

3:30              snack

4pm              workout #2

5pm              shower

5:30 pm       dinner/family time

7:30 pm       bedtime workout

Basically Mark Wahlberg is just a regular guy.  A regular guy who has a cryo-chamber. What is that anyway? And are we reading this right – ninety minutes for a shower? Maybe that comes from hanging out with the funky bunch.  Umm, yeah before he was an actor, he was a singer with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Any one remember that? Here is one of their songs I Need Money.  He got almost 50 million for his last movie; he doesn’t need money any more.

Now he can afford to play golf – every day.  We don’t know if he’s any good, playing every day he ought to be. But he is really fast. He only has 30 minutes scheduled for golfing.  Yes, we realize that it was probably two hours for golf with a snack break.  The snack might have been delivered by a drone. Yes, Marky Mark is a just a regular person playing golf daily, working out twice a day, and hanging out in his cryo-chamber.

Ryan Reynolds, another regular guy, picked up on the humor behind Wahlberg’s daily routine. He decided to share his own schedule and took a little poke at Walhberg.  Just a few keys to understanding his: 1. MOMA is the Museum of Modern Art, 2. Blake is Blake Lively the actress and Reynold’s wife, and 3. Reynold’s is the spokesperson and minority owner of Aviation Gin.

We don’t know why Reynold’s schedule is all capital letters – perhaps he’s that much more important.

Enough of personal schedules let’s get to the heart of the matter: is it better to be a lark or an owl?

In other words, is it better to get up and go to bed early or is it better to stay up late and get up late?  Wahlberg is the king of the larks. So much so that he is almost getting up when the most hardcore owls are laying down.   Some reports side with Wahlberg and the Larks. Studies suggest that about a quarter of the population are Larks.  They also indicate that Larks tend to be more successful academically, more goal driven, live longer.  In fact some reports indicate that being a night owl is dangerously bad.

So be a Lark, right?  Not so fast. There are other reports that indicate there are benefits to being a night owl.  Owls tend to be more creative, have stronger bursts of energy, and better memories. Hmm, so which to be?

That may not be our decision. Studies also indicate that we are genetically predisposed to be an Owl or a Lark.  So, you are born that way.

Whether you or a lark or an owl – or maybe something in between like a blue jay – we hope your routine includes time for reflection. And we all know that there is no better way to reflect than to get comfortable and light up a handmade Tabanero cigar!
